First aid for trigger finger
Trigger finger occurs when the tendons operating the fingers become inflamed and swollen. In this blog post we discuss trigger finger and some simple first aid steps which you can take to help with trigger finger.
What is trigger finger?
When tendons in the hand become inflamed and swollen they can ‘catch’ in the tunnel through which they run.
Often the swelling results in a nodule (swelling) forming which becomes trapped. This prevents the finger from moving fully.
In addition there can be pain and swelling over the nodule.
The most commonly affected fingers are the ring and middle fingers
First aid treatments for trigger finger
You should always seek advice from a medical professional about trigger finger. They will be able to advise on the most appropriate course of treatment.
There are however some simple home first aid treatments which you can try:
Anti-inflammatory medication
Simple anti-inflammatory medications (such as ibuprofen) and painkillers can help reduce the pain and inflammation associated with trigger finger. Always read the label carefully before taking any painkillers and seek advice from a healthcare professional if unsure.
Rest and splinting
Simply resting the affected finger can allow the inflammation causing the trigger finger to subside. You may be able to get a splint fitted which can rest the finger in a fixed position.
